Hi. Hi. Good to be back. Right. Right. *nods to Serene*
So, the mystery is solved. This is what I do in EVE - I be a commander guy. Got all the skills needed under the present build maxed, and I don't mind saying it took me a good long while to do. Got the implants...ships...mods....the whole sheebang. So, this upcoming change was a shock-thrill (c'mon. there's such a thing!) Naturally, what you've chosen to specialize is going to be the holy cow you wish to remain untouched. But, I have to say the changes are intriguing.
I'm accustomed to seeing myself as bringing my command skills along with me. All the training it took, implants, etc., it was as if your presence brought the increase to your fellow pilots - much like a really good coach would. It's not the equipment in this case. It's me! *gloat gloat*. Of course I'm kidding myself, but what a fantasy, no? Though, I have to say one or two things about it bothered me.
The main one was the off grid boosting. I like to see myself as a superman, but to exert influence across such space that one had to warp around to get to the borders seemed a bit much. One of the keys to efficient command is "span of control" and has to do with your reach - literally. Having no limit to my reach (in system) did seem a bit on the Superman side. Though I know the immediate limitation this particular change will instantly impose, I can see the sense in it and grudgingly concede it's the right thing to do.
Making the ship the instrument of command, rather than my mighty, learned, well-trained charismatic self...that's going to be a bit harder to take. Though, I see the sense in this as well - for the same Superman reasons. I think the vulnerability, risk/reward factor is significant with this. Being able to ensconce myself in a tidy little corner and be the man behind the curtain will be missed. Again, the enemy having the possibility to pull the curtain back is .... (ugh) fair, too.
The one last thing I'd like to see is a specific command ship for each race, rather than roping the T2 battle cruiser into the role. I still want to see the T2 BC get a pure combat role. Just give me something hard to blow up, with maybe some oompf for my little modules radiating my omnipotence to the fleet...something with a cup holder and a lot of chrome maybe?
This should all be very interesting. It's hard to say it's a welcome change until we see it in practice. I'll just leave it at, I can see why. I hope the implementation is worthy of the ambition.
Paradise is like where you are right now, only much, much better.
